Dupuis![]() Within a week, says Dupuis, they were reviewing submissions (they received about 11 “of a solid length”) and began editing, with Dundurn contributing design and marketing help. Between friends and chat groups and neighbours who include writers and someone from Dundurn Press, they cobbled together a team of sorts. Apparently she said “great idea” and they were off to the races. “I was just sitting on the couch with my wife (ROM publishing maven Sheeza Sarfraz) and said ‘Should we throw together a literary journal with some of our friends?’” recounts Dupuis. The genesis of the fledgling new literary journal “The Quarantine Review” is just such an example. But sometimes these things get started when, as Toronto writer and poet Jeff Dupuis tells it, “when you’re in the middle of doing something else.” ![]() It seems intuitive when you look back at it. ![]() A journal of the plague (OK, pandemic) year ![]() ![]() ![]() Mike's crazy about Tatiana, a girl in his class, but is one of the few classmates who doesn't get invited to her party. At home, he has to deal with an alcoholic mother and a father who appears to be having a rather obvious affair. At school he is aloof and seemingly disconnected. From the outset, it is clear that Mike is a square peg in a round hole. The story seems a simple one – two 14-year-olds sort of borrow a car – but the execution is beautiful. Its American stoops and faucets and pants for trousers mixed with euros and kilometres-an-hour make for an interesting hybrid. Tim Mohr has done an excellent job with Why We Took the Car. Fellow German Cornelia Funke aside, I am hard-pressed to think of other contemporary foreign children's authors available in English (though I know the Pushkin imprint is trying to redress this). The lack of translated children's (in this case Young Adult) fiction is our loss. ![]() I have been irregularly reviewing children's books for the Guardian for more than 10 years and, if memory serves – with the exception of Tove Jansson's Moomin books – this is the first book I've read in translation for review. ![]() ![]() ![]() These books were actually written in 1991 (so NO it's not a Twilight knock-off lol) and L.J. The first omnibus of the Vampire Diaries, The Vampire Diaries: The Awakening and The Struggle, is the first two books of the Vampire Diaries combined into one. ![]() Speaking of The Vampire Diaries, that is going to be the book review this week. This week, I'm getting the second book in the Chronicles of Nick series, Invincible, I also plan on finishing The Vampire Diaries: The Return: Midnight this week. Due to the love I have for the show that I would like to remain untainted, I will not be continuing this series. To make things even worse, when she discovers he is a vampire, she doesn't freak out like any normal human would have done. She fixates on him and when he is eventually hers, she becomes one of those girlfriends where their boyfriends are their life. She treats people like they're minions and her one goal in life is to be with Stefan. Granted, I am not a huge fan of her on the show, but I hate her even more in the book. One character I just cannot get over is Elena. For starters, the characters aren't even the same people as the show and when I mean they aren't the same, I mean names, descriptions, and personalities. Usually I read the book before the adaption, but I decided to make an exception since I love this tv show so much. ![]() Recently, I discovered the show was loosely based off a book series. ![]() I recently was introduced to it by my friend and I have been binge watching it for months.
